As one of the world’s premier research institutions, Stanford is home to approximately 2 million square feet of laboratory space and over 5,000 different research projects at any given time. The cutting-edge research that takes place in these facilities often requires energy intensive equipment that must be run continuously to maintain the integrity of the research. Additionally, because of stringent Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) regulations, labs utilize a host of other systems requiring significantly more energy to operate than you might find in a standard academic building. Thus, lab space often represents a crucial opportunity to increase efficiency and reduce waste.

The easiest way to get involved in laboratory sustainability at Stanford is to participate in My Cardinal Green, an online platform that provides you with tailored recommendations based on your responses to a 10-minute assessment. Implement enough recommendations and you'll receive a reward of your choice—a $75 cash reward, a sustainability enhancing item or experience, or charitable donation equivalent to that amount.

CARDINAL GREEN LABS online training

The Cardinal Green Labs online sustainability training module is designed to educate the typical lab user to exercise sustainable behavior around lab supply purchasing, chemical use, energy efficiency, proper waste disposal, water consumption, and more.
