Employee & Student Commuting

Main content start

Definition:

This category includes emissions from employees and students traveling between their homes and their work or study sites. This includes commutes to the main campus, Stanford Redwood City, and other satellite locations. This category comprises both driving emissions and alternative transit emissions.

Methodology:

Driving Emissions:

Stanford parking permit data is used to identify commuting mileage and vehicle fuel efficiency, which are used to calculate precise emissions per trip using emissions factors from the EPA. Data from the annual employee and student commute survey is used to gauge the frequency of driving commutes based on hybrid working patterns.

Alternative Transit Emissions:

Average distances traveled by mode per trip in the San Francisco Bay Area are used along with modal split data from the employee and student commute survey to estimate total passenger miles traveled on commuter rail, light rail, and buses. Emissions factors from the EPA for each transit mode are used.

Stanford Transportation oversees many successful transportation demand management programs that reduced emissions by an estimated 23% between 2009 and 2019. With increasing hybrid and remote work, emissions decreased by an additional 25% between 2019 and 2021. Find Sustainable Commute Options available through Stanford Transportation here!
