Second Life for Stanford’s Signature Tiles
What would have been demolition debris turns into design assets that preserve Stanford’s iconic architecture and divert 141 tons of clay tiles from landfill.
Stanford has several programs to support the reuse of materials year-round. These programs cover bulky items like furniture, everyday office supplies, excess chemicals from labs, and personal items like clothing and shoes. By passing on good stuff and scoring secondhand items, you are helping to reduce waste on campus and are conserving precious resources.
Getting rid of unwanted items and scoring gently used items for free has never been easier with the Stanford Property Reuse Slack channel. This channel enables staff and faculty to share Stanford property (furniture, electronics, office supplies, and lab supplies) with one click – saving time, money, and resources. Looking for something specific to use on campus? Post a wanted ad and score your next great find for free!
No immediate takers? Staff and faculty can use Stanford’s ReUse Site to advertise and request excess university property, such as furniture, electronics, supplies, vehicles, and more.
Researchers can now reduce their impact on the environment while cutting costs by minimizing the volume of chemicals purchased and disposed of as waste. Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) proudly offers a dynamic inventory of surplus chemicals available to the Stanford research community—at no cost! The Surplus Chemical Program is a vital piece of the university’s commitment to waste minimization, promoting resource sharing and environmental stewardship.
Roble Reuse is a student-run sustainability effort to provide the Stanford community a place to donate and receive used shoes, clothes, and dorm essentials. This promotes environmental sustainability by diverting waste from the landfill and supports the financial sustainability of students by providing gently used items for convenient pick up on campus. Follow Roble Reuse on Instagram to view operating hours, contact them via email, or join the mailing list.
To further promote sustainable fashion, Recycle for Change Collection Boxes are located across campus for donations of clothes and shoes. Items get a second life through second-hand clothing dealers, helping to cut down on waste on campus and promote eco-conscious fashion. Locate a Recycle for Change Donation Box.
The Give & Go program makes it easy and convenient for students to donate unwanted items during move out – like bikes, clothing, mattresses, small appliances, and home electronics – with the peace of mind that comes from knowing they will go to good use! Not only does this initiative help keep valuable items out of the landfill, but it also directly supports First-Generation and Low-Income (FLI) students. Join the movement and contribute to a sustainable future while making a positive difference in the lives of those in need. The Stanford community has diverted over 500 tons of materials from the landfill through student move-out, transforming unused items into opportunities for students and communities.
