Each year during Spring quarter, labs from the School of Engineering engage in a sustainable spring cleaning to collect, donate, and swap unused items – everything from used telescopes to spare tennis rackets.
This year’s collection, the fourth annual, was the largest and most attended so far, according to Facilities Operation Manager Anthony To. “Our goal as facilities is to support teaching and research, and this collection helps labs do that,” said To. “Staff can get rid of old items to make space for new technology.”
In addition to clearing research space, the annual swap repurposes donated equipment. An entire truckload of usable items remained at the end of the event and were added to Stanford’s ReUse site to be claimed. Interested in refurbishing your space or looking for new lab supplies? Items that could not be reused were recycled, resulting in over 6 tons of materials saved from the landfill, the equivalent of around 800 trash bags.
