Less Plastic, More Impact: How Our Alumni Travel Program Is Reducing Single-Use Waste
Stanford Travel/Study, an educational travel program for alumni and friends of the university, is tackling plastic waste trip by trip.
Facilities and building managers play a key role in achieving Stanford’s sustainability goals. Explore the tools below to support your work.

Stanford’s Facilities Design Guidelines play a crucial role in shaping the campus’s waste infrastructure to achieve regulatory compliance and support the university’s sustainability goals. Consult the Waste Bin and Infrastructure Design Requirements for new construction and remodeling efforts to ensure compliance with state laws for waste and materials management. Your participation and attention are key to our collective success!
To stay aligned with state laws and make progress towards our zero waste goal, the Office of Sustainability conducts regular inspections of the interior waste collection system. These inspections are essential for maintaining waste standards and ensuring infrastructure is set up for maximum recycling and diversion. With the help of a third-party mobile app, contamination is assessed and valuable insights are gathered to fuel programming and support effective sorting. After each inspection, building managers receive a post-inspection report that outlines findings and actionable steps. Have questions about a recent inspection? Connect with the Office of Sustainability to work together to create a more sustainable campus.

Looking to donate used furniture or equipment prior to a move or new construction? Wondering how to source free, gently used items for your building? Stanford’s Reuse website allows you to post unwanted items directly to the site and gives you an opportunity to obtain free, new-to-you items for your building. This provides an opportunity for furniture and equipment to be reused on campus – saving time, money, and resources!

Does your building provide a guide for new and existing building occupants? Use our sample building guide to include information on the waste system in your communications. For existing occupants, offering regular waste updates ensures items are properly sorted. Obtain content ideas from this sample slide deck for your next building-wide communication.
Locate and manage your waste bins through FIMS, the Facilities Information Management System. To access a map of your waste collection points (academic buildings only), type in your building name, scroll down to “Building Attributes List,” and click on the PDF under “Interior Waste Collection Point Maps”.
