
Less Plastic, More Impact: How Our Alumni Travel Program Is Reducing Single-Use Waste
Stanford Travel/Study, an educational travel program for alumni and friends of the university, is tackling plastic waste trip by trip.

All students are provided recycling and landfill bins for their living spaces. Students are required to empty their bins at a waste enclosure. To request bins, labels, or signs, contact your Housing Service Center.
Undergraduate Students: Compost bins (for food scraps, compostable service ware, and paper towels) are located in lobbies, kitchenettes, and restrooms. Additionally, students can request a compost bin for their dorm room through the Housing Service Centers.
Graduate Students: Compost bins are provided along with recycling and landfill bins.
Recycling, compost, and landfill carts are serviced weekly by PSSI. Other services include biannual and seasonal special collections, compost giveaways, and more. Stanford provides recycling, compost, and landfill bins for a fee for special events on campus. Bins are labeled and color-coded and include associated signs. To order bins, submit a Customer Funded work request at least three days before your event. For questions, contact PSSI via email or call (650) 321-4236.

Stanford’s waste service provider supplies project and contract managers with roll-off boxes and dumpsters for construction, demolition, and deconstruction jobs on campus.
Stanford Environmental Health & Safety provides services to minimize safety, health, environmental, and regulatory risks in a manner consistent with fiscal and environmental stewardship. Special collection programs include batteries, electronics, lab gloves, and chemicals.
Stanford has several programs to support the reuse of materials year-round for bulky items like furniture, excess chemicals from labs, and clothing and shoes.
All food generators on campus are required to donate surplus edible food. Stanford is piloting an initiative to collect excess food from cafes and events on campus to donate to the local community.
