Power Smart Practices

Especially on hot days, everyone can help to protect our campus power supply and lower strain on our electric load. Outsmart hitting our peak power by enjoying low-energy activities and reducing electricity use during weekday peak hours from 12 to 8 p.m.

At Offices & Classrooms:

  • Close window coverings before the sun rises high up in the sky.
  • Turn off computer monitors when leaving a work station.
  • Unplug office equipment when not in use.
  • Turn off lights during the day.
  • Charge electric vehicles and equipment outside the hours of 12 to 8 p.m.
  • Share any critical, sensitive electric loads with our Facilities Energy Management Team, and earn café and bookstore rewards for helping us assess our collective electricity load.

In Labs:

  • Remember to shut the sashes on lab fume hoods.
  • Put autoclaves on standby mode when not in use.
  • Charge electric or lab equipment outside the hours of 12 to 8 p.m.
  • Share any critical, sensitive electric loads with our Facilities Energy Management Team, and earn café and bookstore rewards for helping us assess our collective electricity load.

For Residences:

  • Charge electric vehicles and personal transportation devices outside the hours of 12 to 8 p.m.
  • Smartly time the use of laundry machines, stoves, and ovens outside the hours of 12 to 8 p.m.
  • Close window coverings before the sun rises high up in the sky.
  • Turn off lights during the day.
