Energy Conservation for Students

Join thousands of others at Stanford who are taking steps to conserve energy and protect Stanford’s power supply. Students taking these daily actions can have a big benefit to Stanford’s energy savings.

Manage your plug load with energy-efficient lights and smart power strips

Reduce your energy use by switching to LED bulbs, using smart power strips, and relying on shared appliances instead of personal ones. Plug load — everything you plug in — accounts for over 22% of Stanford’s electricity use, so managing it makes a big impact. Avoiding personal fridges, TVs, and space heaters and using energy-saving tools like Stanford’s Big Fix software can help lower your footprint even more.

Power Smart Practices

At Stanford, we collectively protect our campus power supply and lower strain on our electric load. Here are daily tips to use for dorms and residences:

  • Turn off lights during the day
  • Unplug equipment like laptops when not in use
  • Close window coverings before the sun rises high up in the sky to keep things cool
  • Using laundry machines or the residence kitchen area? Smartly time the use of these higher electric demands outside peak hours of 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Cardinal Comfort

Every building’s heating and cooling system is unique. By adjusting the temperature in your residence you can save energy while keeping warm and staying cool.
