The next decade of climate action has begun

Explore our plan, and join the effort

Stanford University is committed to climate action—launching the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability to advance knowledge, solutions, and impact through research and education—with leadership that starts on campus. Stanford’s new Climate Action Plan further mitigates the impact of the institution’s greenhouse gas emissions and prepares the campus for a more resilient and sustainable future.

Closing the Gap

Building on an 82% reduction in Scope 1 & 2 emissions since 2011, Stanford’s new Climate Action Plan addresses “hard-to-abate” emissions in the most fiscally responsible way to reach 93% by 2040.

Accelerating Global Solutions

While Stanford is committed to shrinking its own carbon footprint, Stanford’s greatest climate impact is launching the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, the first new school in 75 years. The mission of the school is to advance knowledge, solutions, and impact through research and education to create a thriving, enduring future for humanity and the planet. Increasing Electrical Reliability

To power the next generation of breakthroughs, Stanford is enhancing its transmission and distribution infrastructure to support world-class teaching and research, showcasing that a global university can run with nearly zero emissions.

Contributing to Regional Progress

Stanford’s climate strategy doesn’t stop at its property lines. The university is piloting wildfire and forest resilience projects and demonstrating solutions to electrification and carbon sequestration that support and protect the entire region.

Our Strategy

Over 150 actions across 15 topic areas will further mitigate our emissions impact and build resilience to the changing climate.

Mitigating Our Emissions

Building a sustainable Stanford starts with being accurate about our footprint. Stanford is taking responsibility by measuring, tracking, and managing Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions.

Adapting to Our Climate Future

By assessing climate risks to the campus, Stanford is turning climate insights into action, ensuring the university is prepared and protected for years to come.

Advancing Solutions Through Research

The Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability accelerates impactful scholarship to secure long-term prosperity for the planet.

Sharing Our Approach

Stanford’s sustainability achievements are community- and data-driven. Strategies are collaboratively developed by experts across campus and grounded in careful use of resources to deliver the greatest impact.
