Recycling, Compost, & Landfill Services
Family-owned business, Peninsula Sanitary Service Inc. (PSSI), has served as Stanford’s waste service provider for over 80 years. In 2023, after a three-year competitive bid process, PSSI was awarded a new 10-year contract to continue waste operations on campus, and provide new services that offer multiple benefits to the campus community.
This partnership continues to provide the campus community with high-quality services that are safe, reliable, and efficient at competitive rates, while helping achieve Stanford’s Zero Waste by 2030 goal, diverting 90%, or more waste from landfill.

Special Collection & Regulated Waste
Stanford's Environmental Health & Safety Department supports and advances the teaching, learning and research activities at Stanford by promoting a safe and healthy campus environment. They provide and coordinate programs and services that minimize safety, health, environmental, and regulatory risks in a manner consistent with fiscal and environmental stewardship. Special collection programs include batteries, electronics, lab gloves, and chemicals.

Event Services
Events can be challenging when it comes to waste reduction. PSSI provides recycling, compost, and landfill bins to help manage waste at events on the Stanford campus.
Construction Services
PSSI supplies project managers and contract managers with roll-off boxes and dumpsters for construction, demolition, and deconstruction jobs on the Stanford campus.
Reuse & Donation Services
Stanford has several programs to support the reuse of materials year-round for bulky items like furniture, excess chemicals from labs, and clothing and shoes.
Food Recovery Services
All food generators on campus are required to donate surplus edible food. Explore resources for reducing edible food waste on campus.
