Zero Waste as Climate Action

Stanford is in the process of updating its Climate Action Plan, which will include strategies to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions through waste reduction, reuse, recycling, composting, and sustainable procurement.

Zero Waste Action Plan

Main content start

Waste is a climate and justice issue.

Greenhouse gas emissions are linked to every stage of the supply chain, from raw material extraction to manufacturing, transportation, and eventual disposal. Reducing the amount of waste generated and increasing recycling and composting help mitigate climate change. Reducing waste from the start paves the way for healthier communities and a more sustainable world.

This graph shows how Stanford's waste emissions have changed from 2019 to 2023.

Stanford's greenhouse gas emissions associated with materials management from 2019 through 2023.

Stanford's climate action planning principles are built on pillars of mitigation, adaptation, and resilience, and are viewed through lenses of justice and community engagement.
