Waste Services

Construction Projects and Contractors

Construction activities are the second largest contributor to the university’s scope 3 emissions. Ensuring that construction materials are reused and recycled is an essential part of meeting the university’s climate and zero goals.

Construction Services

Main content start

Peninsula Sanitary Service Inc. (PSSI) is Stanford's exclusive waste service provider, which includes the collection of construction material. Project managers and contract managers must utilize PSSI for roll-off boxes and dumpsters for construction, demolition, and deconstruction jobs on the Stanford campus.

Debris Boxes

PSSI provides four debris box sizes with varying heights. It is important to consider the type and quantity of materials and space constraints when choosing a debris box.

Guidelines for Debris Boxes

Disposal Do’s and Don’ts

  • Material must not extend past the rim of the box. Overloaded boxes will not be serviced.
  • Dirt, asphalt, rock, and concrete must not exceed seven cubic yards per box.
  • No tires, wet cement, and cement chunks larger than 6 x 6 x 12 inches in diameter, or tree trunks larger than 12 inches in diameter.
  • No refrigerators, computer monitors, televisions, electronic waste or items that require special handling.
  • No hazardous waste or chemicals. For proper disposal of hazardous waste, reference this guidance from Environmental Health & Safety.

Billing Information

Contractors must pay for the first box in advance, unless a Stanford University work order is submitted. Once credit is established, then invoicing can occur. Service for boxes is on a first-call first-service basis. Services must be scheduled by 1 pm the day before the service needs to be completed. Same day service can be arranged for a fee. Non-usage fees are billed daily if dumpsters/boxes are not emptied within a 30-day period.
