Vendor Compliance with Senate Bill 1383

Compliance with Stanford’s Food Waste Reduction & Recovery Program requires all food generators to:

  • Implement and track food waste reduction practices
  • Donate edible food to a food recovery organization; compost any food that is not reused or donated
  • Either establish a signed contract with an edible food recovery organization or use University’s contracted food recovery organization
  • Keep records of food waste reduction practices and donation type and amounts onsite and prepare for possible inspections by either the Office of Sustainability or Santa Clara County to ensure compliance and comply with necessary improvements
  • Report quarterly waste reduction practices and total food donated to the Office of Sustainability.
  • Allow inspections by the Office of Sustainability or Santa Clara County to ensure compliance and comply with necessary improvements
  • Attend Food Sustainability and Recovery Working Group on a quarterly basis.
  • Train staff on safe food recovery methods annually

Compliance with Stanford’s Waste Bin Standards requires all food generators to:

  • Have color-coded bins and signage in front and back of house: blue for recycling, green for compost, and black for landfill
  • Have color-coded liners in waste bins:  blue for recycling, certified compostable green for compost, and clear for landfill
  • Have recycling, compost, and landfill bins paired together; no waste bin shall stand alone
  • Separate organic waste into compost bins in front and back of house
  • Properly sort waste into recycling, compost, or landfill streams in front and back of house to reduce contamination in all bins
  • Place the correct waste stream in the correct color-coded outside dumpster or bin
  • Provide annual waste sorting training for all staff
  • Allow for waste infrastructure to be inspected annually for compliance
