A Prescription for a Greener Campus

Edward Florendo, Animal Care Supervisor at the School of Medicine, identified a remedy for a hard-to-recycle plastic in his labs, helping to divert thousands of pounds of plastic from landfills annually.

After the School of Medicine’s recent transition to Stanford's Zero Waste Building System, Edward contacted the Office of Sustainability to determine a solution for a unique single-use plastic container frequently used in his labs.

By collaborating with OOS and Stanford’s recycling processor, Edward was able to implement a procedure to turn what once was landfill waste into something recyclable. By removing filters and most of the labeling, the containers are acceptable in our recycling stream.

Edward's leadership is just one example of individual actions that are key to building a more sustainable campus.

Does your lab or building generate unique waste that could be recycled? Contact the Office of Sustainability to inquire.  `
