Building on Stanford's Campus

Each year, in conjunction with the Cardinal Green Buildings energy conservation campaign, Stanford curtails heating and cooling systems in campus buildings over the two-week Winter Closure. The campus community also pitches in by "turning off for break" — unplugging electronic devices, closing windows, and in some cases turning off thermostats. In 2018, Stanford saved $427,000 through these conservation efforts, contributing to a cumulative savings to university departments of $4.9 million over the last 18 years. This year, student residences also contributed significantly to these savings, with dorm complexes saving as much as 66% compared to the same time last year and row houses saving as much as 75%! Thanks to all our partners in Sustainability & Energy Management and Buildings & Grounds Maintenance for making this year’s Winter Closure a success! Find Out More.
