Students Help Drive Energy Reductions Through Peer-to-Peer Education

One week before Winter Closure, more than 40 student volunteers canvassed seven Stanford dorms with key energy-saving actions to take before the holidays. The goal: to see if personal reminders to over 3,000 students would have an impact on reducing energy use in select buildings over the three week closure. The results spoke for themselves: thanks to additional efforts by custodians and building managers, increased communications to building residents, and canvassing by Energy Challenge volunteers, buildings that were included saw a 15% reduction in electricity use and 12% reduction in heat use compared to the same period last year. That’s equivalent to taking 21 homes off the grid for one year, or avoiding 197 tons of CO2 emissions! Read More about Winter Closure
