Stanford University earned Pac-12’s award for Best Fan Engagement during the Zero Waste football game against UCLA on October 17, 2019. During these Game Day Challenges, which are held every year for football and basketball games, universities compete to see who can divert the most waste from landfills.
Various efforts led to high fan participation, resulting in an overall diversion rate of 44% from the stadium. Engagement strategies included communications to all season-ticket holders and students, zero waste tailgate kits, and rewards for sustainable behaviors through the My Cardinal Green platform.
Office of Sustainability staff also collaborated with a Stanford psychology class to better understand how tailgaters approach waste. After observing and interacting with tailgaters, the students made recommendations to the Office for how to more effectively communicate waste sorting during future sporting events.
