The 2016 Stanford football Game Day Challenge saw a 24% increase in waste diversion with the addition of new composting and recycling bins around the stadium concourse. Forty compost bins were added inside Stanford Stadium, with compost bins added to the primary tailgate lot. Staff and student volunteers worked closely with game vendors and concessions to promote the new recycling and composting infrastructure and engage fans with sustainability throughout the game. Efforts included improved signage on landfill, recycling, and compost bins throughout the stadium. These efforts resulted in a Game Day Challenge diversion rate nearly five times higher than that achieved in 2015. Outreach and education efforts will continue throughout the year to further increase the diversion rate from athletic events.
