Approximately $150,000 in research funding was saved and hundreds of pounds of waste diverted in two lab materials sharing events in the 2016-2017 academic year. Over 100 labs participated in donating good quality, unwanted lab staples such as biohazard disposal kits, protein-extraction chambers, freezer racks, textbooks, and office chairs that other labs could then claim for themselves. The lab share events are an initiative of the Office of Sustainability’s Cardinal Green Labs program, which works with labs to reduce waste, conserve water and energy, and reuse materials. The program offers services such as free installation of energy-saving equipment timers and low flow faucets and rebates for energy efficient low-temperature freezers.
